Walk like it's for Barack!

Since the election we have found ourselves feeling empowered to make a difference with things that matter. Reinforced by our success, we have sought out other areas where we might apply our newfound skills and energy. Sarah is on the Session at Linwood United Church, that is, she is an Elder, on the governing board. At a Session Meeting in late November she had an inspiration...our membership rolls are dwindling, and, to try to address this concern and let people know what a wonderfully diverse and socially responsible place Linwood United is, we would canvass the area around the church, to invite neighbors to come get to know us! Several Sundays ago, after church, Kelvin and Sarah trained 3 other church members to knock on doors with us--we went to the houses within several blocks of the church, talked to people about a Christmas Ornament-Making Party to be held at the church, and left doorhangers about that and other church activities, when people weren't home. We kept track of our "numbers," and gathered information on the people with whom we talked. We later called people who expressed interest and provided transportation, when needed. The Ornament Party was a huge success, and may become an annual event!

At work, Sarah expressed concern to the President of our professional Labor Union, the AFGE, that we need to do a MUCH better job of recycling at the KCVA, and agreed to coordinate such an endeavor. The union president asked if Sarah would be a union liaison to legislators, and Sarah agreed. Sarah ran for a vacant position on the (Kansas City) Hyde Park Neighborho0d Association, and won a contested election! Woo Hoo!

Okay, at some point we need to schedule in some leisure activities and "down time," but right now we are loving everything we do. Except the housework and putting away campaign-related literature and so forth.
